Smart meter rollout will help SMEs save

Smart meters could allow small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK to save between four and five per cent on their energy bills, a British Gas-backed report has revealed.

The government aims to replace 53 million gas and electricity meters in homes and firms across the country within seven years to help consumers make £14 billion collectively in savings.

It is hoped that the new meters will give businesses more accurate bills, allowing them to reduce their energy consumption more effectively.

The report estimates that firms will be able to reduce their electricity bills by an average of 4.3 per cent, as well as 4.7 per cent on their gas expenses, equating to a saving of around £230 every year.

Dean Keeling, managing director of British Gas Smart Homes, said: "Smart meters are good news for households, businesses and Britain.

"They are fundamentally changing how we use energy, bringing billions of pounds worth of benefits to Britain."ADNFCR-2811-ID-801454019-ADNFCR
