phone & broadband for business
While the governments commitment to improving the future of broadband in the UK is welcomed, existing technology cannot be deemed inferior, says one expert.
There has been rising concern over the past two years with regards to how far behind the UK is when it comes to broadband technology compared to many other major nations.
This has spurred the government to earmark tens of millions of dollars a year to invest in broadband technology, laid out in the recently released Digital Britain report.
However, one industry official has stated that whilst the government’s investment is certainly a welcome move, it would not be right to brand existing broadband technology in the UK as inferior.
Stephen Hearnden, director of telecommunications and technology at Intellect, admitted that there was obviously some work to be done in this area, and that this was something that had been recognised and was being dealt with by the communications regulator, Ofcom, and by the government.
However, he stated that the fact that there was room for improvement in this area did not mean that the current technology was inferior or of low quality.
He stated: “If you look next year, for example, we and only two or three other countries in the world are looking for a universal service commitment to bring two megabits to every home. I think we’re doing quite well.”
