Ofcom reveals surge in broadbnd consumption

Data from Ofcom reveals that around two thirds of UK Households have a broadband connection, with mobile broadband accounting for a significant number of new signings.

The Ofcom report shows that broadband was present in 68 percent of UK homes in March 2009, showing a jump of 10 percent in one year a year. A jump in the average time spent online per day was also revealed – from 9 minutes in 2004 to an incredible 25 minutes in 2009.

It is expected that mobile broadband will sustain this rate of growth; in May 2009, more than 250,000 customers signed up to a new mobile broadband package compared to 139,000 last year. This indicates that roughly one in nine households in the UK now have a mobile broadband account.

The bulk of UK internet access is still done through fixed line however, because it is much faster, more reliable, and offers ample data transfer limits.
