Children spend 10 hours a week online

Children spend an average of ten hours a week using broadband services, a new survey has revealed.

The study by uSwitch.com found that nearly a third of children have a computer in their bedroom, with two thirds of those using regularly before going to bed.

More concerning was that 34 per cent of parents have no filters on the computers used by their youngsters, and a third were unaware such features even existed.

Jason Glynn, communications expert at uSwitch.com, said it was vital for guardians to check what controls they have at their disposal.

He added: “Speed and price should take second place to safety – but with most broadband services including filtering software for free, there really is no excuse not to take action.”
