Mobile phone security demand predicted to rise

A technology expert has predicted that mobile phone security will become increasingly important.

The Home Office recently unveiled a series of technological advances designed to cut mobile phone crime, including a device that emits a loud noise if the phone is taken a certain distance from the user.

Natasha Stokes, editor of Mobile Choice magazine, believes there will be a demand for these sorts of security measures, especially from users who conduct vital business through their phones.

"The market for mobile security will increase due to need – as smartphones become more widespread, it’s increasingly likely for your mobile to be your internet hub, and hence the place where you store and access sensitive information, from account passwords to conducting bank transactions."

According to James Treadwell, a lecturer in Criminology from the University of Leicester’s Department of Criminology, the rapid growth of the electronics market has meant that burglary is increasingly being replaced by mugging.

British Crime Survey statistics show that burglaries dropped by 59 per cent between 1995 and 2008-09 as robbers have seeked to target people carrying small, expensive devices instead.ADNFCR-2811-ID-19616269-ADNFCR
