The power of 3G signals may be boosted, after it emerged that Ofcom is considering the matter.
Britain’s communications regulator was asked by one of the major networks if the allocated power levels could be increased and the other 3G licensees subsequently indicated they would like their power levels expanded too.
The consultation paper published by Ofcom states that "increased transmission power significantly improves the coverage", something that could help business mobile users who cannot afford to be out of touch.
At present, the maximum is 62 dBm, although other countries such as Germany and France have no limits.
Ofcom is considering raising it to 68 dBm and stakeholders have until March 19th to voice any objections about the proposals.
Among the concerns is that an increased signal could interrupt other spectrums, such as those used by PMSE wireless cameras.
The 3G spectrum became operational at the beginning of the last decade, offering better network capacity and eventually becoming the standard for mobile communications.
