Take-up of broadband growing in Scotland

Take-up of broadband internet by households and businesses in Scotland is increasing, according to the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA).

Spokesman George White said there is a competitive market for broadband north of the border, with demand for services increasing.

"The government does recognise the importance of giving people access to broadband as more public services go online," he remarked.

However, he said there are a small number of areas where the market does not currently deliver the services consumers need.

In these cases, the ISPA would like to see government efforts being made to ensure no homes or businesses are digitally excluded.

Figures released recently by Ofcom show that satisfaction with broadband speeds in rural areas in Scotland has fallen in the past year.

Indeed, as speeds have been boosted in urban areas, many of those in the countryside have felt left behind, with only 74 per cent of customers claiming to be happy with their current speeds, compared to 86 per cent a year ago.
