A strike by staff at BT could affect the running and maintenance of business broadband services, one expert has warned.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has confirmed that 60,000 staff at the telecommunications company voted unanimously to hold a strike ballot as a dispute over pay continues.
Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, explained how the strike by BT staff will affect broadband services in the short term.
“I think there’s definitely going to be potential issues with maintenance. It’s definitely going to affect day-to-day maintenance and problem resolution during the strike.
“It’s probably not going to be the kind of thing that affects hugely the rollout of next-generation broadband unless the strike becomes prolonged.”
Members of the CWU will be balloted over a possible strike if no resolution is found between BT and the union by June 4th.
BT recently revealed that it intends to invest an extra £1 billion into the rollout of fibre broadband to around two-thirds of households and businesses in the UK by 2015.
