Web security specialist tells businesses to train staff against cyber crime

Businesses are being urged to educate their staff on how to protect their companies from the threat of cyber crime.

Panda Security recently shut down the Mariposa botnet, which stole information from almost 13 million computers around the world, including credit card data, usernames and passwords.

Meanwhile, a report by Symantec in February revealed that 75 per cent of businesses from around the world have experienced cyber crime in the past 12 months, with 29 per cent saying that the amount of crime had increased over the same period.

According to Luis Corrons, technical director for Panda Security, anti-virus software, firewalls and regular updates are all important, and he also insists that he has seen the successful results of training staff.

He said: "The main thing is education and training of the users.

"I know this sounds strange – many people say, ‘I’m running a business, I don’t want to train my users on how to do certain things’. But in the end it’s worth the effort."

Steps businesses can take include practising with fake security attacks where employees are sent emails asking them to click on links or requesting personal information.ADNFCR-2811-ID-19664240-ADNFCR
