High-speed broadband to boost IT

The UK’s IT infrastructure is set to improve with the introduction of faster broadband, new research has suggested.

The study by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, found that two thirds of IT managers believe the roll-out of high speed broadband across the country will provide a major benefit to businesses.

It was also found that 65 per cent of respondents believe more emphasis should be placed on improving the skills of those working in the IT sector.

Commenting on the findings, David Clarke, chief executive officer of BCS, said: “Our ability to process, share and manage information will determine the success of our society.

“To be successful, we need a high performing IT education system and a population with the IT skills to be productive, empowered citizens.”

Earlier in the week, Digital Britain minister Stephen Timms announced that the government is intending to introduce a new tax of 50 pence a month on fixed phone lines, which will be used to fund the rollout of a next generation network.
