No one looks forward to commuting and a recent survey of British workers has found that over 60 per cent want to reduce the time, stress and costs of their daily commute to and from work. And more than one in three agree that one of the best ways to do this is by working from home remotely.
However, 46 per cent of those questioned in the Citrix GoToMyPC survey indicated that their bosses won’t allow them to work from home.
It seems many SMEs are simply unprepared to allow this to happen – with 25 per cent of small businesses saying they lack the technology and/or know-how to do so.
Not only are some small businesses unprepared, they’re also slightly apprehensive. Separate research from LogMeIn shows that many SMEs are hesitant to allow their staff to work remotely, 21 per cent worrying about decreases in staff productivity.
Have no fear, business owners – studies have consistently shown that those who work remotely actually put in more hours than their office counterparts. In fact, the LogMeIn survey showed that 68 per cent of the businesses who use remote access found it increased productivity amongst their staff.
Not only that, a lot of companies with remote working programmes have found they help increase employee retention and reduce bunking off amongst employees. And let’s not forget the health benefits of letting those who feel under the weather work from home to reduce possible outbreaks in the office.
What are your views on working from home – is it a good or a bad thing?
