Businesses told of tablet security risks

Businesses have been told of the security risks they need to take into account when using the latest tablet computers and netbooks.

The recent release of the Apple iPad has seen considerable interest in this area of technology with ABI Research estimating the market will be worth £8.6 billion by 2015.

Dan Shey, enterprise practice director at ABI Research, explained how these devices could pose a risk to businesses.

“Most Ultra-Mobile Device (UMDs) bought and used by the businesses early in the forecast period will be acquired by smaller companies whose security concerns with mobile devices are less,” he said.

“However, generally, because UMDs are a mobile device and can be taken outside the premises of the business, businesses will need to be more cognisant of the information or data contained in these devices and the potential security threats.”

He added that future UMDs specifically targeted at businesses would have better security features.

Meanwhile, research by International Data Corporation recently showed that 38 per cent of British workers use smartphones such as the BlackBerry.ADNFCR-2811-ID-19884561-ADNFCR
