A business growth expert has said that a decisive election result could help small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) achieve growth.
Research by UswitchforBusiness recently showed that 71 per cent of SMBs have seen little or no improvement in the trading environment compared with a year ago, with only 11 per cent saying they are in better shape than before the economic downturn.
David Molian, director of the business growth program at Cranfield School of Management, said that it would have been a surprise if the majority of businesses were experiencing growth.
He added: "The outlook will improve with a decisive outcome at the election because many people are putting off making decisions; particularly investment decisions and stocking decisions, until the outcome of the election is decided.
"If we have an indecisive outcome with a hung parliament, and the prospect of another election within twelve months, that will just continue the misery."
Molian also expressed his belief that businesses could be helped if the government puts pressure on banks to increase lending.
