To Nathan King, 'www' means 'why wont it work' - a sentiment most of us can relate to. Luckily for us, Nathan is a man with some answers. Nathan runs his own computer repair business, 'Absolutely Broken Computers?' in Kent. He shares a few words about his experience with us.
What kind of business are you running?
We currently focus on I.T. and Computer Repairs/Maintenance, but are looking to branch out into Server-side, Web & Mail Hosting, and Web Design.
How long has your business been up and running?
About one and a half years.
How many people are employed in your business?
Technically one! However, we do have two Freelance Specialists: Laptops and Web Design.
What are some challenges you’ve had to overcome in starting your business?
Lack of finance, brand criticism, failures from previous Telecom companies (NOT XLN!), client awareness of business.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of running your business so far?
Working hours to suit one-self, freedom from menacing bosses, able to lose unwanted, unreasonable clients, turning a hobby into a profession, potentially un-capped salary scale - though maybe not at time of interview!
In what ways do you use phone and broadband in the daily running of your business?
Practically everything! Clients like to be regularly updated as to the progress (or lack of) with their PC's. We use broadband for testing and research purposes and very often to download a potential fix or Software Update that could resolve a problem - that's not to mention the prospects of running a Web/Mail Server in the future!
Do you use the internet to promote your business?
Not much - we have an Enhanced advertisement on Yell.com and a Website. The Internet is an awkward place for an I.T. Repair Company to advertise in, as it is frequently one of the factors causing problems for clients.
Are there any professional websites which you use and would recommend to other small businesses?
Federation of Small Business, Guild of Master Craftsmen, as far as I.T. specific sites are concerned, they are too many and varied!
Do you have any advice to give to anyone else starting/running a small business?
If it's this year - DON'T! Ensure you have plenty of capital behind you, and a good selling point, i.e. the customer services right, and you are half way there!
