Ofcom planning for super-fast broadband

Communications watchdog Ofcom have published proposals aiming to deliver super fast broadband to UK homes and businesses.

The proposal is set to encourage investment in the technology and to ensure competition and consumer choice in the market, according to the regulator.

Ofcom have said that fibre-optic broadband would deliver speeds of up to 100mbps, whereas the current, copper cables, currently deliver speeds of up to 8mbps to most households.

Super-fast broadband would benefit homes, allowing multiple members of a household to download material, while simultaneously watching high-definition TV.

The technology would be equally beneficial for businesses, allowing for two-way video calling, improved data storage facilities and a greater opportunity to work from home.

Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said: "I am delighted that investment in fibre is already under way and other plans are taking shape.

"Fibre networks are one of the most exciting developments in communications that the UK has ever seen. Ofcom's plan of action will encourage further investment while promoting and sustaining competition so we can all benefit."
